چکیده

We extend the Description Logic ALC with a “typicality” operator T that allows us to reason about the prototypical properties and inheritance with exceptions. The resulting logic is called ALC +T. The typicality operator is intended to select the “most normal” or “most typical” instances of a concept. In our framework, knowledge bases may then contain, in addition to ordinary ABoxes and TBoxes, subsumption relations of the form “T(C) is subsumed by P”, expressing that typical C-members have the property P . The semantics of a typicality operator is defined by a set of postulates that are strongly related to KrausLehmann-Magidor axioms of preferential logic P. We first show that T enjoys a simple semantics provided by ordinary structures equipped by a preference relation. This allows us to obtain a modal interpretation of the typicality operator. Using such a modal interpretation, we present a tableau calculus for deciding satisfiability of ALC +T knowledge bases. Our calculus gives a nondeterministic-exponential time decision procedure for satisfiability of ALC + T. We then extend ALC + T knowledge bases by a nonmonotonic completion that allows inferring defeasible properties of specific concept instances.

Semantic Foundation for Preferential Description Logics

Description logics are a well-established family of knowledge representation formalisms in Artificial Intelligence. Enriching description logics with non-monotonic reasoning capabilities, especially preferential reasoning as developed by Lehmann and colleagues in the 90’s, would therefore constitute a natural extension of such KR formalisms. Nevertheless, there is at present no generally accept...

Semantic Preferential Subsumption

We present a general preferential semantic framework for plausible subsumption in description logics, analogous to the KLM preferential semantics for propositional entailment. We introduce the notion of ordered interpretations for description logics, and use it to define two mutually dual non-deductive subsumption relations

Concept Model Semantics for DL Preferential Reasoning

The preferential and rational consequence relations first studied by Lehmann and colleagues play a central role in non-monotonic reasoning, not least because they provide the foundation for the determination of the important notion of rational closure. Although they can be applied directly to a large variety of logics, these constructions suffer from the limitation that they are largely proposi...

KIT REPORT 110 Preferential Default Description Logics

This report is based on the default integration for Description Logics (DL) presented by Quantz and Royer at KR’92. We specify the general framework for Preferential Default Description Logics (PDDL), and present various alternative PDDL, addressing issues like implicit objects, priorization between defaults, and maximization of default application. We show that all PDDL satisfy the formal prop...

Modelling Object Typicality in Description Logics

We present a semantic model of typicality of concept members in description logics that accords well with a binary, globalist cognitive model of class membership and typicality. We define a general preferential semantic framework for reasoning with object typicality in description logics. We propose the use of feature vectors to rank concept members according to their defining and characteristi...

DysToPic: a Multi-Engine Theorem Prover for Preferential Description Logics

We describe DysToPic, a theorem prover for the preferential Description Logic ALC + Tmin. This is a nonmonotonic extension of standard ALC based on a typicality operator T, which enjoys a preferential semantics. DysToPic is a multi-engine Prolog implementation of a labelled, two-phase tableaux calculus for ALC +Tmin whose basic idea is that of performing these two phases by different machines. ...
